(FWIW, my reference system is Hales Revelation 2 speakers with a Bryston amp, and my bedroom system is CSW New Ensemble III with a Harman/Kardon receiver, so I have at least some experience shopping at a wide range of price points.) I am giving a bunch more as gifts this year to my friends in dorm rooms or on a budget. I defy anyone to find a $40.00 set of speakers that sounds anywhere near these. Yet the P1000s richly finished cabinet is only 15.5' x 15.25' x 14'. The P1000 Powered Subwoofer is one beautiful beast of a subwoofer-capable of rock-solid, ultra-high-output bass response down to 22Hz. Yes, the MicroWorks is a lot better (great midrange compared to these), but it costs three times as much. The modes are chosen via a convenient selector on the underside of the speaker enclosure. For smaller rooms and moderate volume levels, *and with careful placement and adjustment of bass unit*, these are a STEAL. I have a set of these in my home office, another set at work, and have recommended to various friends. If you are expecting to be able to favorably compare these speakers to systems costing *an order of magnitude* more, you are living on another planet. You cannot compare PCworks (US$39.00) to even the lowest-priced of the models you mention (NHT SuperZero are about US$300/pair, *plus* they require a high quality amp to really perform, kicking it up to at least US$600). I took advantage of their 45 day trial policy, set them up at home, and now I've got some truly high-end sounding speakers for bargain basement money.Mr. Unfortunately, the setup at the CSW store I went to didn't do these speakers justice: they had them mounted to the wall, and I really think these speakers should be on stands to sound their best. I'd highly recommend these speakers to anyone in the market for small, satellite-type speakers. Because of their small size, I can have them about 8' from the front wall of my living room (which is about 12' wide by 24' deep) and they completely fill the room with sound. Cambridge Soundworks Newton M50 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers by Henry Kloss Tested. Probably the highest praise I can give the Newtons is that I'm now selling off my surround equipment. A cotton swab and rubbing alcohol will take the sticky coating off the ensemble sats. View & download of more than 160 Cambridge SoundWorks PDF user manuals, service manuals, operating guides. The woofers can be hidden along a wall leaving listeners scratching their head wondering where the speakers are. No preamp, no EQ, no $200 interconnects, and I've got what I'm pretty sure is a VERY accurate reproduction of what was actually recorded. The pairing of the MC100s to the ensemble woofers produces an amazing system. The encouraging thing is, the simpler the set up, the more these speakers shine! Right now I've got a line out from my DVD player to the Newton P500 sub crossover (which BTW is another fantastic unit), high-pass out to a Denon amp, and some decent speaker wire to MC200's. Sensitivity, with a 2.83-volt input of random noise, was 91 dB sound-pressure level (SPL) at 1 meter. Ive got it matched with the Newton MC200 fronts, and its really a gorgeous musical system. All in all, we would call the nominal impedance 8 ohms. I've had the speakers for a little over a month now, and I've set them up all sorts of different ways. Cambridge Soundworks Newton Series P500 Subwoofers. Where to start? I've finally found a pair of affordable speakers that let you hear what you're supposed to hear: everything that's on the CD!! No details lost, no "warmth" added.
